Spencer Lowell’s work seeks to capture how humans relate to the technologies they have created. In Futures Past, Lowell captures the uneasy moment we find ourselves in. While at first sight Lowell’s images might appear to show us the intrusion of technology into the human world, in fact he is offering us a peek under the hood, documenting the myriad ways in which the fantastical technologies we have created already undergird so much of human life.
As technology is increasingly integrated into our lives and thinking, will we look back on this moment with gratitude? With regret? Lowell’s work simultaneously holds the strangeness of our present with the nostalgia a future viewer might feel in response to his images, when humans and their technologies were in alliance, however uneasily.
Spencer Lowell (b. 1983, Los Angeles) is a New York–based photographer whose work explores the evolving relationship between technology and the natural world. Guided by a lifelong interest in both art and science, Lowell’s work spans subjects ranging from scientific discovery and technological advancement to the infrastructures that support them and the people behind it all.
